Our Programmes
Our education team aims to support people of all ages to both understand the importance of their own mental fitness and also how to support it. Our programmes have been designed to be interactive, and practical and provide support, advice, and tools that people can use to support their own mental fitness. The Ewen’s Room team believes building our own resilience alongside others in our community can help us to best cope with the rollercoaster of life. Our programmes can allow for personal development as well as the growth of peer support.
WellBeing Champions
This is a secondary-based education programme for young people 12 to 18 years old.
WellBeing Champions is a secondary school-based educational programme that aims to give young people the skills and knowledge they need to safeguard their mental health and that of their peers.
The WellBeing Champions programme is targeted towards teenagers and young adults. The programme is about helping people understand the importance of their own mental fitness and gives practical ideas and tools to help build resilience and manage our own emotions.
How does the programme work?
The lessons cover:

-
We all have mental health, like physical health, and move along a spectrum.
-
The risk and protective factors to our mental health, including dispelling common myths around mental health.
-
The ways to look after our mental health and wellbeing, and where to seek help when needed.
-
The ways we can support our peers.

The 6-hour programme targeted towards young people aged 11-18. Best delivered in two or three blocks ideally in groups of up to 15.
Ewen’s Room encourages their WellBeing Champions to support themselves and others following their training, depending on the need in their school or workplace. At Ardnamurchan High School, we are supporting our current WellBeing Champions who are running a very successful weekly drop-in for all pupils on a Thursday lunchtime. These sessions have provided a much-needed refuge for a number of our young people at various times, and have helped individuals to build confidence particularly when new to the school. Our WellBeing Champions also provide support to individual pupils as and when required.

WellBeing Champions Mentoring
As part of our WellBeing Champions programme, Ewen’s Room offers ongoing support through mentoring.
The aim of the mentoring is to offer a sounding board, support, and encouragement for our WellBeing Champions and to facilitate a Lochaber-wide network of Champions who can share ideas and offer peer support.
We use one-to-one virtual meetings, goal setting, journal writing, books, podcasts, and additional training to help WellBeing Champions to be the best WBC they can be.

WellBeing Heroes
This is a primary-based education programme for young people 4 to 12 years old.
The WellBeing Heroes programme is targeted at younger children and again is a fun and friendly way to help children understand the importance of their own mental fitness and give them practical activities and tools to try out.
We know that a one-off programme can’t give children all the tools they need to self-regulate and deal with big emotions. However, with ongoing support from parents, carers and teachers. Children can use the tools they have been taught in WellBeing Heroes on a regular basis, and these tools can become a habit for them.
Therefore, a key element to our ongoing support for WellBeing Heroes is our Grown Ups Handbook. This handbook gives information and guidance on the tools taught in WellBeing Heroes, to those caring for children. We hope this handbook will increase adults’ confidence in modelling these tools, and therefore allow children the opportunities to use them in their everyday lives.

4-hour programme targeted for children aged 5-11. Best delivered in two blocks and ideally in groups of up to 15.
Ewen’s Room also offers virtual online support to teachers, parents and carers.

Mini WellBeing Heroes & Stories Around The Fire
Mini WellBeing Heroes
Ewen’s Room ‘WellBeing Mini Heroes’ are designed for the aged 5 and under. 'WellBeing Mini Heroes’ is an adaption of our WellBeing Heroes programme formulated for nursery children. Songs and rhymes form part of these sessions, and they include stories and wellbeing activities at a gentle level which help children understand and cope with their feelings and emotions.
Stories Around The Fire
During the pandemic, we all felt the benefits of being outside. When doing activities outside was our only option, Ewen’s Room worked in partnership with High Life Highland Countryside Rangers to deliver ‘Stories Around The Fire’ sessions in various outdoor locations around the Ardnamurchan peninsula. These were nature-based story time and activity sessions, each with a different seasonal theme, aimed at aged 7 and under (and their parents/carers). They were a great opportunity for all to run around outside and to provide networking and informal support and were so successful that this partnership has continued – with the Rangers and Ewen’s Room planning another programme of events for this year.

An hour experience for a pre-school aged group that’s interactive with stories and songs.

BookBug Sessions with Ewen's Room
BookBug Sessions with Ewen’s Room are designed for the aged 5 and under.
Our BookBug sessions follow the Scottish Book Trust format (https://www.scottishbooktrust.com/bookbug) with a trained Book Bug leader, and Ewen’s Room funding allows these sessions to be taken out to our rural communities. By providing this outreach, Ewen’s Room is enabling children, and their parents, in our more remote communities to engage with this wonderful programme of songs, rhymes, and stories.
